Meike 35mm f/1.7 Lens for Canon EF-M Mount Cameras
Meike 35mm f/1.7 Lens for Canon is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-M mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 56mm equivalent focal length. The six element in five groups optics are multi-coated, closest focus is 1 foot (0.3m) and the lens takes inexpensive 49mm thread filters. Maximum magnification is 0.11x. The diaphragm has eight blades and the lens weighs just 176g. Multi-layer nano coating has been applied in order to suppress ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Meike 35mm f/1.7 is very well made. You would expect a lot of plastic at this price, but it has all-metal construction. While small, it has a satisfying heft in the hand. Even the slip-on lens cap is made of metal, and fits snugly over the lens. The focus ring moves smoothly, with just the right amount of resistance. The lens is fun to use, light and subtle enough to be brought for street photography or any event without attracting the crowd. The lens is small, you could probably call it a pancake so it’s a very good low profile street lens. If you put it on a small APS-C camera, nobody will think anything of you shooting street photography.
Meike 35mm f/1.7 Lens for Canon EF-M Mount Cameras is made specifically for APS-C mirrorless cameras, so it’s focal length is equivalent to a standard 50mm lens. For such a cheap lens the sharpness it provides is superb. Center sharpness is really nice with the Meike 35mm 1.7 even when wide open at f/1.7. As you stop down to around f/5.6 it gets even better. So this is about as sharp as you typically see with APS-C lenses when their tuned for center sharpness. You can get a little sharper or a little less sharp, but for the most part this lens is in the ballpark of good center sharpness. There is a bit of vignetting at f/1.7 and f/2, but it’s mostly gone by f/2.8. The lens had some very minor barrel distortion. Chromatic aberration issues are very minimal as well. At f/1.7 you can get some in some very high contrast situations, but they will clear up at f/5.6.
Individual lens elements feature a multi-layer nano coating to control surface reflections, flare, and ghosting in order to realize a high degree of contrast and color accuracy, even when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, the lens sports a manual focus design for working with subjects as close as 30cm away.
Meike 35mm f/1.7 is an excellent general use lens. The 35mm focal length gives you that 50mm field of view which is incredibly useful and it can work in so many situations. For under $100 dollars, you can’t really go wrong here. Especially since you’re getting an f/1.7 which is still pretty good.
